Duke Portrait (Series)

This was a charcoal series I did of my dog, Duke. Duke is my beautiful brindle Whippet. He spends a lot of his time laying down and sleeping, but when he goes outside, or it's time for food, he suddenly taps in to his Sonic energy. In this series, I wanted to capture this energy even in the moments when Duke was calm and relaxed. I used the landscape around him and harsh light markings to do so. In the first and second photo, the vertical lines of the bean bag spring up around him and bring energy to his soft, curvilinear form. I had fun using the harder compressed charcoal to achieve the effect of his brindle coat.
